About the Ministry
History of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development
The Federal Ministry of Youth Development (FMYD) was established in Nigeria on December 18, 2007, as part of a government initiative to centralize youth-focused policies and programs. Its creation was a result of the strategic merger of the Inter-Governmental Affairs and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) monitoring units, aimed at addressing youth development challenges holistically.
In a significant structural adjustment on November 10, 2015, the National Sports Commission was merged with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, leading to the formation of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development. This merger reflected the government’s vision to integrate youth development and sports management under a unified framework for better coordination and resource utilization.
